Cryogenic optical refrigeration

چکیده
We review the field of laser cooling of solids, focusing our attention on the recent advances in cryogenic cooling of an ytterbium-doped fluoride crystal (Yb:YLiF4). Recently, bulk cooling in this material to 155 K has been observed upon excitation near the lowest-energy (E4–E5) crystal-field resonance of Yb3+. Furthermore, local cooling in the same material to a minimum achievable temperature of 110 K has been measured, in agreement with the predictions of the laser cooling model. This value is limited only by the current material purity. Advanced material synthesis approaches reviewed here would allow reaching temperatures approaching 80 K. Current results and projected improvements position optical refrigeration as the only viable all-solid-state cooling approach for cryogenic temperatures. c © 2012 Optical Society of America

Laser cooling in solids: advances and prospects.
This review discusses the progress and ongoing efforts in optical refrigeration. Optical refrigeration is a process in which phonons are removed from a solid by anti-Stokes fluorescence. The review first summarizes the history of optical refrigeration, noting the success in cooling rare-earth-doped solids to cryogenic temperatures. It then examines in detail a four-level model of rare-earth-bas...

A refrigeration cycle is a chain of various pieces of equipment including compressors, condensers, evaporators, and expansion devices each of which takes on a particular thermodynamic process duty in the cycle that eventually results in the production of the required refrigeration. The results of optimized mixed refrigerant cycles (MRCs) in Part I show that the configuration of MRC is an eff...

We report on bulk optical refrigeration of Yb:YLF crystal to a temperature of ~124 K, starting from the ambient. This is achieved by pumping the E4-E5 Stark multiplet transition at ~1020 nm. A lower temperature of 119±1 K (~-154C) with available cooling power of 18 mW is attained when the temperature of the surrounding crystal is reduced to 210 K. This result is within only a few degrees of the...

Abstract: Minimizing the work consumed in refrigeration system is the most effective measure to reduce the cost of products in sub-ambient chemical processes. The introduction of mixed working fluids into refrigeration system in place of pure working fluids is a recent advancement applied in the field. Due to the lack of systematic design method for Mixed Refrigerant Cycle (MRC), conventional a...
متن کاملSolid-state optical refrigeration to sub-100 Kelvin regime
Since the first demonstration of net cooling twenty years ago, optical refrigeration of solids has progressed to outperform all other solid-state cooling processes. It has become the first and only solid-state refrigerator capable of reaching cryogenic temperatures, and now the first solid-state cooling below 100 K. Such substantial progress required a multi-disciplinary approach of pump laser ...
